Kate Forbes MSP secures Transport Scotland commitment on Laggan road

Work to repair the pothole-strewn stretch of the A889 from Coldair Coffee Shop to the A86 will begin in the coming weeks after Kate Forbes MSP secured a commitment from Transport Scotland.

The welcome news follows a meeting between community representatives, the Badenoch MSP and Transport Scotland in Laggan earlier this week.

Parts of the road have effectively been reduced to single track because of the carriageway surface and the traffic cones on it to prevent motorists hitting the worst potholes.

Kate Forbes MSP said: “It is pretty obvious to anybody that the A889 is in need of immediate improvements as well as longer term works.

“Apart from the immediate need to resurface the road, there is a much bigger question about future-proofing the road.

“Clearly, it needs to be wider, not least because of the increasing number of HGVs and cyclists on the road.”

The Badenoch MSP added: “I wrote to Transport Scotland, and was pleased when representatives accepted my invitation to meet with members of the community. At the meeting, we discussed the pressures on, and the poor state of, the road.

“Transport Scotland committed to improve the road and to provide more concrete information as soon as possible.

“Ultimately, the community want to see improvements delivered so that the road is fit for purpose, and I will personally be pressing Transport Scotland and Bear to deliver these long term improvements as a matter of urgency.”
